DIY Door Canopy Step by Step Instructions:
Step 1: Design – The first step in creating a door canopy is by designing how it will look like. This process is simply a matter of drawing your design on a piece of paper with a pencil. For first timers, it may be helpful in the long run to make a simple canopy first. As you draw, decide how much work you are willing to put on, and how the design will complement the exteriors and interiors of the household.
Step 2: Measurements – Once the design is finalized, do the measurements. It is vital to get the computations correctly as this can affect the outcome of the project. Use a measuring tape to determine the width of the doorway and add a few inches to each side in accordance to the length desired for the canopy. It is important that the canopy reaches at least six inches on either side of the doorway for mounting. To keep track of the measurements, mark the length of the wall using a pencil.
Step 3: Cutting the Canvas – The next step is to cut two pieces of canvas. The first piece will be for the main panel. Cut this according to the width of the doorway, plus one foot more than the desired length of the awning plus another two inches. The second piece will be the flap at the front of the door canopy. Use the width of the main panel subtracted by four inches.
Step 4: Pockets – Fold under an inch of the canvas and sew it together all the way down. This will create a pocket for the aluminum frame. Make it run along the length of the main rectangular panel. Do this for both sides.
Step 5: Sew – Seam together the two shorter ends and the long front end of the front panel. Also sew the rest of the unfinished edge from the front flap panel. Bring together the main and front panel using a sewing machine by placing the front panel on top of the main where both right sides are facing.
Step 6: Aluminum Frame – Create two aluminum poles with the same length as the main panel. Make one more with a size that is the same as the width of the panel. Weld the poles into a U shape then at a 90 degree angle, weld a twelve inch aluminum pole to each end of the long legs. Once the poles have cooled, insert them to the pockets, creating the frame.
